Welcome to the Humanities and
Social Sciences Department
Welcome to the web pages of the PI’s Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (H&SS).
The department plays an integral role in fulfilling the PI’s mission of graduating students who possess the creativity, critical thinking and breadth of knowledge that enables them to succeed as professionals in a variety of disciplines.
We are comprised of the following subject areas: economics, leadership, German, history, Islamic studies and political science.

H&SS faculty, from left to right: Dr. Mark Hayman, Dr. Amani Omer, Dr. Mashhad Al Allaf;
Dr. Abdullah Al Shami, Mrs. Gabriele Harb, Dr. Matthew Webb, Dr. Sarah Jackson
In the SPRING 2012 semester we welcomed our new colleague Dr. Sarah Jackson who came to the PI from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where she had been teaching since finishing her Ph.D. in Economics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2006.
Her research is in applied microeconomics, previously in labor market topics, but she is looking forward to finding new research opportunities in the UAE.
Her approach to teaching economics is to focus on the wide-spread application of economics. With an understanding of basic economic principles (such as “incentives matter”), people can make more considered personal, civic, and professional decisions.
